Steven Universe’s Crystal Gems

I adore Steven Universe. It’s one of my three favorite cartoons right now, because of the gorgeous colors, the amazing characters and more importantly, because the main message is that communication is key for everything. So of course, when it won my weekly poll… I just couldn’t choose just 7 characters, I had to do EVERYONE. But the main ones are the Crystal Gems.

I will probably do this again one day, correct some of the ideas that, by doing a full image by segments, didn’t translate perfectly. But for now, Here, We are the Crystal Gems, and we always save the day.

Jem and the Holograms

Jem and the Holograms has always been part of my childhood. I remember when I watched the TV series, and found ONE store that carried a stamp album of the series. I never got anyone to change stamps with, so it went unfinished, but I loved it with all my heart. We never got the toys in Mexico, so I had to make do with Barbie and the Rockers -which I always saw as an inferior copy to the outrageous fabulousness that was Jem.

Fast forward a lot of years, and  IDW with Sophie Campbell made a dream I had come true. Namely, a more modern Jem comic. Sure, it didn’t last too long, and I still want the second omnibus volume, but while it lasted it was AMAZING. Seriously, go and buy it at your local comic book shop and wonder at the gloriousness that is a Jem story that doesn’t have to sell dolls.

So of course, during my weekly practices, I had to do Jem and the Holograms (And Pizzaz and Stormer because I ran out of time the day I was supposed to finish the Misfits)

And seriously, go and buy IDW’s Jem and the Holograms.

She-Ra Princess of Power

She-ra was another winner in my weekly polls, and one I was REALLY happy to see. I mean, it’s She-ra! And now she’s back in Netflix, which makes it even better because she deserves more love.  When I was a little girl I had She-ra, Katra and Bow (I LOVED my Bow doll), and never missed an episode. Sure, some are really cheesy, but they’re still some of my fondest memories, and, let’s be honest here, one of the first, if not THE first, American Magical Girl.

Sailor Moon

Another series that I love with all my heart, is Sailor Moon. I was lucky enough to be a small part of the dubbing process in Mexico (As I was learning how to translate for dubbing when it aired, and in fact, my first test for translation was an episode of Sailor Moon R), and I have a ton of sweet memories around them.

That’s why I was very happy when they won the weekly poll in my facebook, because I got the chance to draw them again.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a series that changed my life. I’m not kidding, it came on just as the first issue of my first pro-comic came out, and while not the same thing, they had somethings in common (In particular, the main character was a chosen one, and her best friend was a witch. Oh, and her sort of mysterious mentor a Vampire). So of course I loved the hell out of Buffy.

It also had some great characters, like my absolute favorites, Xander and Spike. And helped a lot of my friends to find themselves, and was one of the very first series that had real representation for LGBT+ characters that I saw (Even if I still have some issues with it’s bisexual erasure and I still think it would’ve been more logical for Xander to be Bi. But whatevs)

Nowadays, I don’t consider Joss Whedon the best director in the world, nor the best writer. But I still have a soft spot for Buffy and the Scooby Gang. Because for me, they were always there to make me feel like I was not alone.

Elf Quest

Elf Quest was one of the very first Independent Comics I ever read. Much later I discovered the amazing Strangers in Paradise, that became my absolute favorite, but Elf Quest was the first American non-superhero, non-Archie comic I ever read.  And I was completely enthralled by the story of Cutter, the Wolfriders, and the world of two moons.

And years later, I still think that Wendy Pini’s style is both gorgeous and HARD as hell to follow given the proportions. Still, I just had to give a tribute to the comic, as it just recently ended.

Equestria Girls’ Portraits

I really love the Equestria girls. They’re so cool, and they have a very interesting palette. That’s why when I don’t have a fandom for my daily drawings, I default to them.

Of course, if you are interested in the fandom polls, they happen in my facebook (link on the sidebar) and my Patreon (same). And well, I hope you enjoyed the video process of Sunset Shimmer I posted a few weeks ago.

Fire Brigade

Enen no Shobutai is one of those mangas that grabbed me by surprise. I’m not a big fan of Shonen anymore, and I hate Chosen One narratives, but the rich world where fire fighters actually FIGHT fire rather than extinguish fire kind of caught me fast. Like, well, a wild fire. Every character has a great arc, and while there’s one -not portrayed here- that has waaay too much fanservice for my tastes, it’s still a VERY recommended read.

BTW, thanks to some friends there’s a patch that allowed me to scan enough pictures to keep on Calico Chimera  updated on time, but any help to get a more permanent solution will be really appreciated in both Patreon and Ko-fi.

Drawing Sunset Shimmer

I’m sorry I have not been updating Calico Chimera as religiously as I had, but unfortunately my computer decided my scanner was too old and uncool so it no longer recognizes it.  I’ve tried to solve the issue, but it’s looking it’s going to take a while (And, well, if you want to help a bit by becoming a patreon or sending me some money through ko-fi, the links are on the sidebar always).

In any case, I am trying to do more digital art so that I can share it with you, and other fun stuff. Like coloring videos for my youtube channel and for my patreon. The first one is free for all to see, so here’s how I drew Sunset Shimmer from last week’s daily drawings.

I Zombie

It’s no secret I love Zombies. Well, horror in general, but zombies have a special place in my heart because I adore almost every story that has zombies. So it was no surprise that I completely fangirl over I Zombie despite being a bit behind due to Netflix LA not bringing season 3 soon enough (and when I was in Orlando, I was a bit too busy to binge on the season)  Still, on the series of daily drawings, I just had to draw the cast of the best zombie series on tv, hands down.
